An der heutigen sogenannten „Hunsrückhöhenstraße„, nahe der Ortschaft Wederath, liegt der Archäologiepark Belgium. Seit mehr als sechzig Jahren wird hier ein archäologisches Ensemble aus Gräberfeld und zugehöriger Siedlung ausgegraben und erforscht.
Schon in keltischer Zeit lag diese Region verkehrsgeografisch günstig an der Route zwischen Mainz und Trier. Diese Trasse hat in römischer Zeit weiter an Bedeutung gewonnen und spiegelt in den archäologischen Hinterlassenschaften von Belginum den Kulturwandel wieder, der heute als Romanisierung der indigenen keltischen Bevölkerung bezeichnet wird. Seit 2002 wird den Besuchern des Archäologieparks die über tausendjährige Geschichte dieses Ortes in einer Ausstellung und Rekonstruktionen im Freigelände vermittelt.
Christoph vom hafenradio besucht hier Rosemarie Cordie und Alfred Haffner, die ein Großteil ihrer archäologischen Arbeit mit diesem Ort verbindet.
Rosemarie hat Vor- und Frühgeschichte studiert. Sie ist die Leiterin des Archäologieparks Belginum bei Morbach im Hunsrück und als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin im Fach Klassische Archäologie der Universität Trier tätig. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Eisenzeit, Siedlungs- und Gräberarchäologie, Archäologie Belginums und seines Umlands, Romanisierung sowie die Vermittlung und Präsentation archäologischer Inhalte.
Alfred hat Ur- und Frühgeschichte in Hamburg, München und Saarbrücken studiert. 1966 war er als wiss. Mitarbeiter am Institut für Vor-und Frühgeschichte und Vorderasiatische Archäologie an der Universität des Saarlandes, von 1967 – 1983 als Kustos am Rheinischen Landesmuseum Trier und zuletzt von 1983 – 2003 als Professor am Institut für Ur-und Frühgeschichte der Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel tätig.

Danke für die tollen Podcasts! Höre ich immer wieder gern. das Belginum ist eh eine unterschätzte Perle im Hunsrück und bekommt vielleicht etwas mehr Bekanntheitsgrad.
Vielen Dank für das Feedback! Ich denke auch, dass Belgium eine archäologische Hunsrückperle ist. Ganz bestimmt als Anlaufpunkt für Wanderer und Touristen die mehr über die Geschichte der Region erfahren möchten. Zudem ist auch der wissenschaftliche Wert immens, da man hier ein in sich weitgehend geschlossenes Ensemble hat, das Einblick in Grabsitten, Jenseitsvorstellungen, Lebensweise, Architektur, Handwerk und vieles mehr ermöglicht. Und das über fast ein Jahrtausend.
