Dr. Michael Merkel studierte Ur- und Frühgeschichte in Hamburg, Mainz und Kiel. Er promovierte 2001 an der Universität Kiel über ein fränkisches Gräberfeld im Saarland. Seit 1997 ist am Archäologischen Museum Hamburg (AMH) angestellt und betreut als stellvertretender Direktor die Sammlungen des Hauses und ist zusätzlich verantwortlich für die Bereiche Netzwerke, Datensicherung und App-Entwicklung (iOS und Android). In seiner Funktion als Sammlungsleiter ist er verantwortlich für die digitale Erfassung der Sammlungsbestände des Archäologischen Museums.
